SPARE TIME
Spare Time is a documentary artwork portraying the architecture of community halls in Edinburgh and the activities happening within them. This photographic project celebrates the importance and beauty of the spaces which provide a safe sheltered centre for people to share their interests outside their workplace or home.
Every photograph is displayed alongside a list of the clubs and societies which happen regularly in the corresponding hall, highlighting the activities and venues used by a huge and diverse number of people occurring largely unnoticed. The variety of activities provides a compelling social document of how people like to spend their spare time in places which offer space and shelter in Edinburgh.
"The photograph sits within the modern tradition of finding beauty in unexpected places, which often has relevance beyond appearance. The same could be said of the austere objectivity of 17th century Dutch church interior paintings, which this artwork recalls." Alan Bond - Artist
