SPARE TIME
2018-20
This project celebrates the importance and beauty of communal spaces which provide a safe sheltered centre outside of the workplace or home.
I have photographed numerous empty halls across the breadth of Edinburgh and displayed each hall alongside a list of the clubs and societies which take place there.
Since the impact of Coronavirus, all of these spaces remain closed. Spare Time has taken on another dimension reminding us of how we enjoyed spending time together, clearly demonstrating the great loss that we are currently experiencing and questioning what the future of these spaces will be.
The photograph sits within the modern tradition of finding beauty in unexpected places, which often has relevance beyond appearance. The same could be said of the austere objectivity of 17th century Dutch church interior paintings, which this artwork recalls. Alan Bond - painter
